Jürgen Friedrichs was Professor at the University of Cologne. He was senior editor of the Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie. His major fields of research were rational choice theory, the decline and revitalisation of cities, urban poverty and neighbourhood effects. He has published numerous books and articles in scientific journals. His most recent books are: Cities in the 1990s (1998); The Individualisation Hypothesis (1998); Life in Distressed Neighbourhoods (2000), and Quantifying Neighbourhood Effects (2009, co-edited with J. Blasius an G. Galster). He has been a member of the EAS from the early years when the Academy was established and he served several years as the Secretary of the EAS.
