Fellow of the European Academy of Sociology

 

Diego Gambetta was born in Turin, Italy in 1952. He received his PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 1983. From 1984 to 1991 he was first Junior and then Senior Research Fellow at King's College, Cambridge. From 1995 until 2003 he was Reader in Sociology at the University of Oxford and Fellow of All Souls College. In 2003 he became Professor of Sociology and Official Fellow of Nuffield College. In 2000 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. In September 2012, he joined the Department of Sociology of the European University Institute. His research interests are in Analytical Sociology; Signalling Theory and applications; Trust and mimicry; and Organised Crime. His books include: Were They Pushed or Did They Jump? Individual Decision Mechanisms in Education (1987); Trust. Making and Breaking Co-operative Relations (1988, Ed.); The Sicilian Mafia. The Business of Private Protection (1993); Streetwise. How taxi drivers establish their customers trustworthiness (2005, with Heather Hamill); Making sense of suicide missions (2005, ed.).
