Jürgen Friedrichs, born in 1938, is Professor Emeritus at the University of Cologne. He is senior editor of the Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie. His major fields of research are rational choice theory, the decline and revitalisation of cities, urban poverty and neighbourhood effects. He has published numerous books and articles in scientific journals. His most recent books are: "Cities in the 1990s" (1998); "The Individualisation Hypothesis" (1998); "Life in Distressed Neighbourhoods" (2000), and "Quantifying Neighbourhood Effects" (2009, co-edited with J. Blasius an G. Galster).
