Andreas Flache is a Professor of Sociology, in particular modeling norms and networks, at the Sociology Department of the Faculty for Behavioral and Social Sciences, at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. His main research addresses polarization, intergroup relations in a diverse society, opinion dynamics, cooperation problems, and the role of social networks in these realms. Flache applies agent-based computational modelling and game theoretical modeling, laboratory experiments, and network analysis methods. Flache is currently (2023-2026) the scientific director of the ICS (Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology), a leading research and training center in Dutch Sociology and director of research of the Department of Sociology. Andreas further served terms as director of studies and chair of the department and is a member of the board of the ICS. He holds a master’s degree (Diplom) in computer science (1992, University of Koblenz) and a PhD in Sociology (1996, University of Groningen). Flache has published in social science flagship journals like the American Journal of Sociology, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Organization Science, as well as in multidisciplinary journals like the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences or Science, and specialized journals like Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation, Sociology of Education, Rationality & Society, Group Processes and Intergroup Relations, or Journal of Mathematical Sociology. Since 2021, Flache is the editor-in-chief of Rationality & Society, he is also member of the editorial board of the Journal of Mathematical Sociology.
